In Cyprus, I have participated in an artist residency of Visual Voices for three months. As a bi-communal group of artists, we explored the island’s conflict together while within the buffer zone. This residency was on the theme of Media and Nationalist Narratives. We have looked through conflict narratives, came together to speak about it and present a new outlook through injury. Our exhibition, Crossing 24/31: I always confuse south to north, north to south, also took place in the Goethe Institute, United Nations Buffer Zone of Cyprus on 24-31st October 2020.
My artist statement for the piece which is which?
What can you tell from looking at someone’s face?
Do you understand a person’s identity? If they are from the north or the south of Cyprus?
Taking photos was not as common as in the current days. It was considered a luxury and mostly took place on special occasions. One of the most common images in our family albums is the wedding and couple photos. This is prevailing for all communities in Cyprus (including turkish speaking Cypriots, greek speaking Cypriots, Armenians, Maronites etc.)
By using the photo embroidery method to the old images, Tüzel found in her family archive, she tried modernising them by using embroidery as a tool for highlighting the connection between the past and the future. Emphasizing the similarities between the couples and the two communities of Cyprus was another aim of her piece 'which is which'.
